Colombo Fashion Week

Colombo Fashion Week (CFW) is the largest fashion industry event in South Asia by number of participating designers. Founded in 2003 by Ajai Vir Singh, it has grown from a small national showcase into an event that attracts buyers, media, and designers from across the region. Most editions are held in September at a venue in central Colombo — past shows have taken place at the BMICH (Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall) and at private event spaces in the Fort and Colombo 3 areas.

What the Event Covers

CFW runs over three days with runway shows scheduled across each evening. The programme typically features:

• Established Sri Lankan designers presenting ready-to-wear and couture collections
• South Asian guest designers from India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan
• An emerging designers competition for new local talent
• Trade and industry sessions during the day, open to buyers and press

The aesthetic leans toward a blend of South Asian textile traditions with contemporary silhouettes. Sri Lankan batik, handloom fabric, and lace work from Beeralu craftspeople have all featured prominently in recent collections.

Attending as a Visitor

Colombo Fashion Week is primarily an industry event but public tickets are made available for runway shows, particularly for the final night. Tickets typically range from LKR 3,000 to 10,000 depending on the show and seating tier. Check the official CFW social media channels closer to the date for ticket sales, as the organiser does not always maintain a live website year-round.

Dress code is smart casual at minimum; the crowd at runway shows tends toward more formal or fashion-forward attire. Photography policies vary by show — some designers restrict phone use during their runway presentations.

Practical Information

September sits at the tail end of the south-west monsoon, so expect the possibility of afternoon showers. Evening shows are typically held indoors, so weather rarely disrupts the programme directly.
