Whale Watching Season - Mirissa

The waters off Mirissa on Sri Lanka’s south coast are among the most reliable places in the world to see blue whales at close range. Between November and April, when the south-west monsoon has passed and the ocean south of the island settles, boats depart daily from Mirissa harbour for whale watching tours that target the deep submarine canyon roughly 15 to 20 km offshore.

What You Can Expect to See

Blue whales are the headline draw — Sri Lanka’s southern waters sit on a known migration corridor and sightings rates during peak season (January to March) are high compared to most global whale watching destinations. Sperm whales are also encountered regularly, along with pods of spinner dolphins that frequently approach boats.

Sightings are never guaranteed on any given day. January through March is widely considered the most reliable window; November and December can be productive but more variable depending on residual swell. April sees the season taper off as conditions begin to change.

Other species occasionally reported include Bryde’s whales and, less commonly, orcas. Whale sharks are sometimes seen in the same waters.

The Tours

Most tours depart at around 6 to 6:30 am from Mirissa harbour, last four to six hours, and return by midday. The early start is essential — calmer morning sea conditions give much better sighting opportunities and a more comfortable ride.

Prices from operators in Mirissa typically run between LKR 4,000 and 7,000 per person (verify rates on arrival, as these shift seasonally). This usually includes a packed breakfast on board. Look for boats that carry a naturalist or guide who can identify species and manage the approach distances — responsible operators maintain at least 50 metres from whales.

Book your tour the day before rather than on the morning itself, as popular boats fill quickly during January and February. Your guesthouse can usually arrange this.

Getting to Mirissa

Mirissa is on the south coast, approximately 150 km from Colombo. The most direct route is by air-conditioned bus or hired car along the Southern Expressway, which takes two to two and a half hours. Tips for the Day

• Take seasickness medication the evening before if you are susceptible — some swell is usually present even in calm conditions
• Bring a waterproof bag for your camera and phone
• Wear a hat and sunscreen; the sun on open water is intense even in the morning
• Arrive at the harbour by 5:45 am at the latest on the day of your tour
